OZ Minerals’ Century mine considers production cuts
Decline in zinc prices has pushed OZ Minerals’ Century mine in Queensland into loss-making zone. The company is considering whether it should cut production or defer a life-extending waste rock removal program.
Managing director Andrew Michelmore, OZ Minerals, said:
There are a lot of people who are much higher on the cost curve (Century is about mid-point) who should probably be shutting down their production. By us backing off, all you do is sustain those people. So we believe that the pressure needs to be maintained to get some rational behaviour in the (metals) market.
